Can cats eat tuna?

Caution for cats

Cats love it, and a little is fine as a treat, but tuna shouldn’t be a regular part of their diet.

What’s the risk?

Human tuna lacks nutrients cats need, and a diet heavy in tuna can lead to mercury build-up and nutritional problems. Some cats get so hooked that they refuse their normal food.

Signs to watch for

  • Upset stomach from oily or salty tuna

How much is dangerous?

A teaspoon now and then. Cat foods with tuna are balanced and fine.

If your cat ate some

No action needed for small amounts.

How to share it safely

Plain tuna in water, not oil or brine.
