Can dogs eat tuna?

Caution for dogs

An occasional small amount of cooked or canned tuna in water is fine, but tuna is high in mercury, so don’t make it a habit.

What’s the risk?

Tuna is a large fish that builds up mercury. A spoonful now and then is fine, but regular feeding isn’t a good idea. Choose tuna in water, not oil or brine, and never raw tuna with bones.

Signs to watch for

  • Upset stomach from oily or salty tuna

How much is dangerous?

A spoonful occasionally.

If your dog ate some

No action needed for small amounts.

How to share it safely

Plain, cooked or canned in water, with no salt or seasoning.
