Can dogs eat avocado?
!Caution for dogs
A little avocado flesh isn’t poisonous to dogs, but the pit, skin and high fat content make it a poor choice.
What’s the risk?
Avocado contains persin, which is dangerous to birds and some livestock but rarely causes problems in dogs. The real risks are the pit, which can block the intestines, and fat, which can trigger pancreatitis. Guacamole often has onion and garlic.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Belly pain
- Repeated vomiting or not passing stool (possible blockage)
How much is dangerous?
A small bite of plain flesh is usually fine. A whole avocado, the pit or guacamole is a concern.
If your dog ate some
If your dog swallowed a pit or ate guacamole, call your vet.
How to share it safely
If you share, offer a small piece of plain flesh with no skin, pit or seasoning.
