Can dogs eat garlic?
✕Toxic for dogs
No. Garlic is in the onion family and is several times stronger, so it can damage a dog’s red blood cells.
Why garlic is dangerous
Like onions, garlic contains compounds that cause anemia, and it is roughly three to five times more potent. Garlic supplements sold as natural flea remedies are not a safe idea. Garlic bread, sauces and seasoned leftovers can all add up.
Signs of poisoning
- Weakness and lethargy
- Pale gums
- Fast breathing
- Red or brown urine
- Upset stomach
How much is dangerous?
A clove or two is unlikely to harm a large dog, but whole bulbs, powder or regular feeding can cause anemia. Small dogs are at higher risk.
What to do right now
Call your vet if your dog ate a large amount or eats garlic regularly. Signs may take days to appear.
