Can I give my dog ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)?

Toxic for dogs

No. Ibuprofen and other human painkillers like naproxen can cause stomach ulcers and kidney failure in dogs.

Why ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) is dangerous

Dogs are far more sensitive to these drugs than people. Never give human pain medication to a pet unless your vet tells you to. Vets prescribe dog-safe anti-inflammatories instead.

Signs of poisoning

  • Vomiting, sometimes with blood
  • Black, tarry stool
  • Not eating
  • Drinking and urinating more or less
  • Wobbliness or seizures with large doses

How much is dangerous?

A single regular-strength tablet can cause stomach ulcers in a small dog.

What to do right now
