Can dogs eat grapes & raisins?
βToxic for dogs
No. Grapes and raisins can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs, and there is no known safe amount.
Why grapes & raisins are dangerous
Researchers believe tartaric acid in grapes is the main culprit. Some dogs get very sick after just a few grapes while others eat more without trouble, so there is no way to predict a safe dose. Raisins, currants and sultanas are more concentrated and riskier per bite, and baked goods like raisin bread and trail mix count too.
Signs of poisoning
- Vomiting or diarrhea within a few hours
- Lethargy and weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Belly pain
- Drinking and urinating less, or not at all, after a day or two
How much is dangerous?
Any amount. Treat even one or two grapes as an emergency for a small dog.
What to do right now
Call your vet, an emergency hospital or a pet poison line right away, even if your dog seems fine. Vets can safely make your dog vomit if it is soon after eating, then give IV fluids and check kidney values for a few days.
